Welcome letter by Bonnie Castillo, RN Executive Director of CNA/NNOC/NNU

Submitted by ADonahue on

Welcome! I could not be more thrilled about coming together for our CNA/NNOC Convention – 120 Years of Advocacy. When we stand together in unbreakable solidarity, union nurses know we can win big for our patients and for each other. It’s so critical that we carve out time to share strategies and knowledge, listen to each other’s experiences, make new connections, refuel and recharge, and grow our solidarity. Look forward to seeing you.

Large group of nurses outside hospital hold signs "Staff Up for Safe Patient Care"
The rally will focus on urgent issues at their facility, such as CNVAMC's 25 percent nurse vacancy rate, executive management's lack of respect towards RNs, work-life imbalance for nurses who are stretched beyond the limit, and patient safety risks — all of which are driving nurses away.

RNs at Cedars-Sinai Marina del Rey Hospital have issued a 10-day notice alerting hospital administrators of the nurses’ intent to hold a one-day strike on Sept. 6, 2023. Earlier this month, the nurses overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike as the Cedars-Sinai administration is refusing to address critical nurse recruitment and retention issues.

Patient Handling

Submitted by ADonahue on

Frequent manual patient handling can cause microinjuries, which accumulate into chronic and sometimes severe musculoskeletal disorders and back injuries. RNs need protection from this ergonomic hazard. Sprains, strains, and tears make up 52% of all injuries that result in days away from work for RNs. Unsafe patient handling causes the bulk of these injuries, some of which have ended nurses’ careers.

The most effective solution is a coordinated safe patient handling program at the hospital-level.
