UC nurses kick off contract negotiations with statewide rallies
Registered nurses working at University of California medical centers will hold rallies across the state on Tuesday, June 10 to mark the start of their contract negotiations. Nurses’ primary priority, across medical centers statewide, is reversing and halting the UC management’s growing practice of short-staffing its facilities, cutting back on resources, and forcing their hardworking, overstretched providers to do more work with less support.

Attacking Workers’ Rights
LCMC Health CEO Greg Feirn has squandered over a million dollars in attempts to prevent University Medical Center (UMC) nurses from forming a democratically elected union. According to the Department of Labor, in just a two-month period in 2023, LCMC spent $1.4 million on anti-union consultants to stop UMC nurses from organizing. Despite a barrage of round-the-clock captive audience meetings and misinformation, UMC nurses overwhelmingly voted to unionize at the end of 2023.
Legacy of Greed
Over the past 15 years, LCMC Health has grown from just a single children’s hospital to the second largest hospital system in the greater New Orleans area. This expansion has been very lucrative for LCMC. During this time, LCMC has made over $1 billion in net income.
Charity for Whom?
For almost 300 years, Charity Hospital served the people of New Orleans, providing accessible, quality health care, especially for underinsured and low-income patients.
UMC Nurse Stories
Nurses at UMC began negotiating their first contract with LCMC Health in March 2024, shortly after their historic union victory in December 2023. Short staffing, rampant workplace violence, and lackluster benefits led UMC nurses to vote overwhelmingly to unionize, becoming the first nurses to do so at a private hospital in Louisiana.
