National Nurses United endorses Abdul El-Sayed to represent Michigan in U.S. Senate
National Nurses United (NNU), the largest union of registered nurses in the United States with more than 225,000 members, today announced its endorsement of Abdul El-Sayed from Michigan for U.S. Senate. El-Sayed has been a longtime partner to NNU in the fight to win a single-payer health care system, and nurses are ready to send him to Congress.
“Nurses are thrilled to endorse Abdul El-Sayed to represent Michigan in the U.S. Senate,” said NNU President Jamie Brown, RN. “As a fellow Michigander, I have witnessed Abdul rebuild entire agencies, and he knows what it takes to make government work for the people. He is a longtime, staunch advocate for single-payer, and nurses will be with him on day one to fix our broken health care system.
“I’m incredibly honored to have earned the endorsement of National Nurses United,” said Abdul El-Sayed. “As the son and grandson of nurses, and a public health doctor, I know that nurses are the backbone of our health care system. But hospital conglomerates are pushing impossible workloads on them, making their working conditions less safe while burying them in piles of paperwork. I will always stand with union nurses who show up every day to take care of their patients and fight for a better, fairer health care system. Together, we’ll pass Medicare for All and build a health care system that focuses on patients, rather than corporate profits. When we empower nurses, all of us win.”
NNU supports candidates who are committed to nurses’ values, including safe patient staffing in all hospitals across the country, protecting the rights of workers to organize, and guaranteeing health care to everyone. In a recent Gallup poll, nurses were voted the most trusted profession in the United States for the 24th consecutive year. NNU looks forward to helping elect Abdul El-Sayed and working closely with him in Congress on the important issues that affect registered nurses, our patients, and our communities.
National Nurses United is the largest and fastest-growing union and professional association of registered nurses in the United States with more than 225,000 members nationwide. NNU affiliates include California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee, DC Nurses Association, Michigan Nurses Association, Minnesota Nurses Association, and New York State Nurses Association.
