Recently, a federal administrative law judge with the National Labor Relations Board handed nurses a victory, finding Sutter Hospitals in the San Francisco Bay Area engaged in illegal “unfair labor practices†when it unilaterally cut paid sick leave and eliminated all paid healthcare coverage for RNs who work less than 30 hours per week, affecting hundreds of nurses and their families.

Nurses File for Election to Join CNA at Providence Little Company of Mary, Torrance
Registered nurses at Providence Little Company of Mary, Torrance filed for an election with the National Labor Relations Board July 30, 2013 to join the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United (CNA/NNU). The NLRB will then determine a date to hold a federally supervised secret ballot election for the nurses. The nurses submitted a sufficient number of signed union cards (30%) to trigger the process for setting the election for the approximately 725 RNs.

Sutter Health dealt unfairly with nurses, says federal labor board
A federal administrative law judge with the National Labor Relations Board has ruled that Sutter Health East Bay Region officials engaged in unfair labor practices in its dealings with the California Nurses Association representing about 300 registered nurses at Sutter Delta Medical Center in Antioch. The Tuesday ruling by Jay R. Pollack said Sutter, based in Sacramento, acted improperly when it implemented terms and conditions of employment in September last year, following prolonged negotiations that Sutter declared at an impasse.

Kaiser nurses protest at First 5 meeting
Registered nurses from Kaiser Permanente and other advocates showed up at a meeting of the First 5 California commission meeting in Sacramento Thursday to protest appointment of their boss to the group. Kaiser CEO George Halvorson was appointed to the commission by Gov. Jerry Brown in May. At the helm at Kaiser since 2002, he plans to retire at the end of the year. The protesters are members of the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United. They showed up at the commission meeting to draw attention to Kaiser’s decision to close a pediatrics unit in Hayward and move patients to a new medical center in Oakland.
