Sgro: Wake up and smell smoke of bad decisions
The Rim Fire above Yosemite is hitting very close to home for me and my family, even though we live in Clovis. I am an emergency room registered nurse and my husband is a firefighter. As a trauma nurse, I see the deadly impacts that fire and smoke can have on our community's health: children with asthma that turns life threatening, the elderly with emphysema gasping for a breath, homeowners trying to protect their property left with second- and third-degree burns.

Dignity Shows Respect for Nurses in New Contract
Nurses with Dignity Health, one of the nation’s largest hospital systems, just settled a four-year master contract covering about 12,000 RNs in California and Nevada that not only keeps everything they had, but actually makes improvements in salaries, expands retiree health and pension benefits, and even establishes a new insurance program to protect nurses in case of needle sticks on the job or other work injuries.

Sutter electronic records system went down in East SF Bay
The electronic health record system at seven East Bay hospitals, medical offices and clinics went dark on Monday in an unplanned outage. The information technology system had been down for a planned upgrade Friday. At about 8 a.m. Monday, the electronic health record system at seven East Bay hospitals, medical offices and clinics went dark. The meltdown continued through late afternoon or early evening, according to early reports from the California Nurses Association.

Cypress Fairbanks RNs Approve New Pact with Houston Hospital
Registered nurses at Houston’s Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center voted unanimously Monday night to approve a new collective bargaining agreement with the hospital, extending the only private union contract for nurses in America’s fourth largest city.
