Avian influenza: What nurses need to know

Avian influenza, also known as bird flu, is caused by influenza Type A viruses that occur naturally among different bird species. Like human influenza viruses, avian influenza contains two glycoprotein surface antigens, hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N), responsible for viral entry and dissemination into host cells. Based on disease severity in infected birds, they are either classified as low pathogenic (LPAI) or highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

Also, Lisa Baum, lead occupational safety and health representative at NNU affiliate New York State Nurses Association, has been invited to join HICPAC.

Nurses condemn California Assembly committee for failing to pass CalCare

California Nurses Association members condemned the California State Assembly Appropriations Committee for capitulating to corporate health care and failing to pass A.B. 2200,  the California Guaranteed Health Care for All Act, also known as CalCare, at a time when public health programs are being drastically cut and a comprehensive, high-quality single payer program would be many Californians’ only lifeline for care.

National Nurses United survey finds A.I. technology degrades and undermines patient safety

A survey by National Nurses United found that artificial intelligence technology (A.I.) often contradicts and undermines nurses’ own clinical judgment and threatens patient safety. The findings underscore the urgent need for stricter regulation and greater input from nurses and health care staff on whether and how A.I. is deployed.
