First hearings on two RN-sponsored California bills, to hold California non-profit hospitals accountable on how much charity care and community benefit services they provide in return for their tax-exempt status and to address the hospital abuse of “observation” status, are scheduled for their first public airing this week by the Senate Health Committee.

Nurse Ann Wayt wins $2 million union organizing case against Massillon hospital

MASSILLON, Ohio – Ann Wayt recently won a $2 million award against Affinity Medical Center after the hospital fired her and attempted to ruin her reputation for helping unionize nurses. Many may think the size of the jury award the most important words in that sentence. For Wayt, a registered nurse for 38 years, one word stands out as the most important -- "reputation." She had always excelled at nursing, especially in patient care. The hospital had even admitted that, giving her its Nurse Excellence Award in 2008.

Thousands of RNs to Strike California Hospitals Thursday, Friday

More than 2,500 registered nurses who work at five Sutter corporation hospitals will go on strike for one-day Thursday April 30, among some 6,400 RNs who will participate in walkouts next week at various hospitals in California and Illinois.

University of Chicago RNs Set to Strike April 30

Some 1,550 registered nurses who work at the University of Chicago Medical Center (UCMC) are preparing to hold a one-day strike April 30. UCMC will be preventing nurses from returning to work for an additional four days following the strike.
