North Adams Mayoral Candidates Debate Health Care, Hospital Closing
In their only debate prior to next week's preliminary, the three candidates for mayor spent more than an hour on Tuesday night answering health care-related questions and trying to slip in elements of their campaign platforms. The forum was sponsored by the North County Cares Coalition, the Tuesday night advocacy group launched with the abrupt closure of North Adams Regional Hospital in 2014.

Opinion: CNA report deserves a serious response from St. Joseph
Like many other contributors to St. Joseph Hospital, I received a letter recently from the president of St. Joseph Hospital, Dr. David O’Brien. The letter is purportedly a response to very specific claims that my union, the California Nurses Association (CNA), has made against St. Joseph Health in general and St. Joseph Hospital in particular. The letter Dr. O’Brien sent is disappointing and filled with generalizations, omissions and unnecessarily accusatory language directed at CNA.

After 9/11, Bernie Sanders Voted Against Iraq. Hillary Clinton Calls Her Vote a 'Mistake'
After 9/11, Americans and the Democratic Party needed someone to stand up to the Bush Administration. We needed a true two-party system that offered a choice between invading Iraq and containing Saddam in the manner we had done for over a decade. Instead, leading Democrats sided with neoconservative Republicans, primarily because 72% of Americans supported the war in 2003.

A Labor Day Story: Union Nurses Making a Difference
The positive impact of RNs in the public arena can be traced back to the earliest American nurses. These RNs, who included women like Lillian Wald and Lavinia Dock, saw communities in desperate need and poverty—whether it was from poor sanitation, lack of opportunities for children working in sweatshops, or no access to healthcare. To advocate for their patients’ health, these nurses understood that they needed to advocate for social reform on a broader level; many early 20th century RNs were deeply involved in social movements. Wald and Dock were representative of nurses who expanded the role of RNs in advocating on behalf of the public interest by speaking out on issues such as women's suffrage, child labor law protections, and union and worker's rights.
