Children’s March to Protest Kaiser Hayward Closure of Vital Pediatrics Unit

TUESDAY 4:00-7:00 p.m. -- Several hundred children, parents, and concerned community members along with RNs will hold a children’s march and rally to protest the closure of the inpatient pediatrics unit at Kaiser Permanente located in Hayward. Over 2,000 young children and teenagers received care in the Kaiser Hayward pediatrics unit in 2011 alone, Kaiser RNs report. Kaiser is planning to close the unit despite record profits.

DeAnn McEwen, co-president of the California Nurses Association, said the district has laid off workers and pushed back the opening of clinics in Ramona and Valley Center. “To support that kind of salary, I think it’s unconscionable,” McEwen said. “They are holding back on what the voters are paying for.”

Nurses, Techs, all staff have worked hard to overcome the adversity of the receivership in the past few years to provide the best possible care in the State. The staff provides the highest level of care and management is taking the wrong direction for the community of Machias.
