The Michigan Nurses Association joined Democratic lawmakers Monday in their push to make Michigan the second state to mandate hospital staffing levels, but hospital officials expressed concern the requirement could backfire due to higher costs.

State legislators are launching a new push to protect the lives and health of all Michigan residents by ensuring that hospitals provide enough nurses to give every patient safe, appropriate care. Responding to nurses’ pleas to fix hospitals’ chronic understaffing, State Rep. Jon Switalski (D-Warren) and State Sen. Rebekah Warren (D-Ann Arbor) have introduced a plan to make Michigan the second state to require hospitals to have a comprehensive nurse staffing plan, including minimum nurse-patient ratios, to protect patients.

Sutter Vallejo Hospital Ordered to Stand Labor Board Trial

The Sutter corporation’s Sutter Solano hospital in Vallejo has been ordered to stand trial on charges that it violated federal law in imposing immediate hundreds of dollars a month in higher healthcare costs for registered nurses, and, starting next year, eliminating all health coverage for nurses who work less than 30 but more than 20 hours a week.
