Registered nurses across California condemn and reject the Trump administration’s recently announced plans to deploy ICE, border patrol agents, and the National Guard to the San Francisco Bay Area. President Trump so far has sought to misuse the National Guard and active-duty soldiers to attack major Democratic-led cities.

Registered nurses at six Tenet hospitals in California have announced they will hold one-day strikes on Thursday, Oct. 30, to protest the multibillion-dollar hospital corporation’s refusal to address nurses’ deep concerns about patient care and safe staffing.

National Nurses United sent a letter yesterday to President Trump urging the United States to “demand a permanent ceasefire, withdrawal of all Russian forces, diplomatic negotiations that respect Ukrainian sovereignty, and just and lasting peace in the country.”

National Nurses United continues to stand in solidarity with our union brother, David Huerta, president of Service Employees and International Workers West, and call for the federal government to drop all charges against Huerta. Huerta was hurt, arrested, and detained in Los Angeles in June while exercising his First Amendment-protected rights to observe and document immigration enforcement activity.

Today, registered nurses from Maine Medical Center (MMC) in Portland and Eastern Maine Medical Center (EMMC) in Bangor gathered in Augusta, Maine, to hold a press conference announcing that they are standing together for better conditions for their patients and fair contracts for nurses working in those facilities.

Nurses at University of Southern California Keck Hospital (USC Keck) and Norris Cancer Center (USC Norris) in Los Angeles, Calif. gave notice to their employers that they will hold a strike for one day on Thursday, Oct. 30.

RNs at Maine Medical Center (MMC) in Portland and Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center (EMMC) in Bangor will hold a joint press conference on Oct. 21 in Augusta, Maine, to highlight their patient safety concerns, including short-staffing, workplace violence prevention, and improved recruitment and retention.

On Saturday, Oct. 18, approximately 100,000 people joined the No Kings Day of Defiance march and rally in downtown San Francisco, jointly organized by Indivisible San Francisco, 50501SF, and National Nurses United. The peaceful mobilization was one of 2,700 events taking place around the Bay Area, across all 50 states and Washington, D.C., and around the globe.

With just a few weeks left until the special election on November 4, California union nurses are knocking on doors and calling voters across the state to vote Yes on Proposition 50.

Registered nurses at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland (CHO) will hold a rally and speak-out on Friday, Oct. 17, to demand UCSF rescind layoff notices sent to nurses on Oct. 6.
