Nurses in California Celebrate 15 Years of Life Saving RN to Patient Ratios Law
California’s historic first-in-the-nation safe staffing ratios, sponsored by the California Nurses Association, took 13 years to win. The legislation has now been in effect since January 2004 despite continued efforts from the hospital industry to overturn the law. Safe RN to patient ratios have been proven to improve the quality of care and nurse recruitment and retention in California hospitals. Registered nurses at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland are celebrating the overwhelming vote to approve a new five-year contract with the California Nurses Association (CNA). The pact, covering 750 registered nurses at the hospital, features patient care and wage and benefit improvements through 2023.
Once Again Nurses Top Gallup Poll as Most Trusted Profession 17 Years Running
Nurses topped the 2018 Gallup Poll ranking of how Americans view 20 major professions, with 84% of the public, four in five Americans, rating their honesty and ethical standards as "high" or "very high." Nurses have ranked first for 17 consecutive years and every year except for one in the 20 years that Gallup has surveyed public opinion on the honesty and ethical standards of various occupations.
