Greenbrier RNs Step up Campaign for Patient Safety
Nurses challenge new CHS/HMA monopoly’s misplaced priorities of high charges, cuts in care. Registered nurses from Greenbrier Valley Medical Center (GVMC), in Ronceverte, W. Va. are stepping up their campaign to make the public aware of their growing concerns about patient safety in their hospital in the wake of a recent merger, the National Nurses Organizing Committee (NNOC) announced today. Community Health Systems’ refusal to address nurses’ widespread concerns about patient safety was the driving force that galvanized GVMC RNs to organize and win representation with the NNOC in August of 2012.

GREENFIELD, Mass — The registered nurses of Baystate Franklin Medical Center (BFMC) are outraged by the latest in a series of illegal actions by the Western Mass health care corporation to flaunt federal labor law, with its announcement today that it was declaring impasse in its negotiations for a new contract with the nurses and its plan to implement its last offer, which would eliminate a key nursing standard that serves to protect nurses from working prolonged shifts.

Study puts Hernando hospitals among worst for inflating prices
TAMPA BAY--Those of you who don't think Hernando County has much of a national profile should know about a new report on hospital pricing from the country's largest nursing organization. Based on information hospitals submit to the federal government, the study shows that two of the 10 most overpriced hospitals in the United States are right here in Hernando — Bayfront Health Brooksville, formerly Brooksville Regional Hospital, at No. 7, and Oak Hill Hospital, which ranked 10th.

CNA RNs from 5 LA Southbay hospitals closest to the major oil refineries attended a special meeting arranged for CNA and neigborhood groups who oppose “tar sands†crude being processed in Wilmington’s Valero refinery. Tar Sands crude is a thick, dirty crude high in sulphur and much more toxic than regular crude. It has been condemned by leading environmental scientists as ‘extremely dangerous’ and the ‘beginning of the end’ where pollution will tip global warming until the point of no return.

Nurses Say Kaiser Oakland Is Shortchanging Patients
They say the hospital is understaffed and is releasing patients prematurely to save on costs. Wait times for women in labor have become increasingly long at Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center. That's according to Jenna Dran, a registered nurse in the labor and delivery unit, who said that it's not uncommon for mothers preparing to give birth to spend hours in the waiting room and in triage before they are admitted to their own rooms.

RNs Rally Today at Berkeley Hospital to Protest Cuts
Registered nurses at Sutter’s Alta Bates Summit Medical Center will hold a large protest today to protest what they say are wildly misplaced priorities as the hospital hands out huge pay increases for top executives and sets hospital charges at well beyond their cost while pushing major cuts for patients and registered nurses. Sutter’s East Bay Regional President David Bradley received pay increases of 64 percent, 43 percent and 19 percent the last three years, 2010 through 2012, and now draws a salary of just under $2 million a year, according to Sutter IRS filings.

Tennessee 5th in Nation in High Hospital Charges
New data released by the nation’s largest nurses’ organization reveals that Tennessee hospitals are among the most costly in the nation, helping fuel a growing scandal of high hospital charges and costs. Tennessee ranks fifth nationally in how high it sets its charges over its costs, with a statewide average charge of 430 percent as a percent of total costs. In other words, the average Tennessee hospital charges $430 for every $100 of its total costs. That’s well above the national average of 331 percent.

California ranks third nationally in how high it sets its charges over its costs, with a statewide average charge of 451 percent as a percent of total costs. In other words, the average California hospital charges $451 for every $100 of its total costs. That’s well above the national average of 331 percent.
