Affinity Nurses Plan Festive Return for RN Unlawfully Fired for Union Activity
Affinity Medical Center registered nurses will be joined by members of local unions and community supporters in a celebratory show of support for RN Ann Wayt on her first day back to work Thursday after a federal court ordered the hospital to reinstate her, the National Nurses Organizing Committee-Ohio, announced today (NNOC-OH). Affinity is also ordered to retract the report it made to the Ohio Board of Nursing seeking to have her nursing license rescinded.

The 185,000-member National Nurses United labor union last month claimed that management at two California hospitals owned by Franklin-based Community Health Systems wrongfully terminated nurses who also were union members and had been outspoken on labor issues.

Nurse Says He Was Fired After Speaking Out Against Hospital Merger
The California Nurses Association has filed an unfair labor practice complaint against Watsonville Hospital for firing 36-year veteran nurse Tim Thomas. It alleges Thomas was terminated after criticizing the merger of Watsonville's Hospital's parent company, Community Health Systems, with Health Management Associates at HMA's Florida shareholder meeting in early January. HMA shareholders approved the $7.6 billion acquisition.

RNs Protest Management's Efforts to Undermine Patient Care at St. Rose Hospital in Hayward
The Registered Nurses at St. Rose Hospital in Hayward conducted a candlelight vigil today to protest management's stalling in negotiations for a first contract and refusing to address issues that are fundamental to quality patient care. In December 2012, after several years of mismanagement at St. Rose, the RNs voted to affiliate with the California Nurses Association. Since that time, RNs have actively sought to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement that preserves some of their existing standards, and also improves them so that RNs can provide the best patient care. The nurses and their bargaining team have focused on standards that also address the retention and recruitment of experienced RNs.

Baystate Franklin Medical Center Nurses Reach Tentative Agreement With Baystate Health
GREENFIELD, Mass — The registered nurses of Baystate Franklin Medical Center (BFMC) have reached a tentative agreement on a new five-year contract, averting a one-day strike that was planned for Monday, Feb. 10. The pact provides protections the nurses had sought to prevent the use of mandatory overtime as an alternative to providing safe staffing at the hospital. It also includes improvements to the nurses’ health insurance benefit and will grant the nurses pay raises.
