Forum TONIGHT-Hayward Community Steps up Fight to Keep Vital Kaiser Pediatrics Unit in Hayward Open

HAYWARD—A public forum to fight the closure of the hospital pediatric unit at Kaiser’s facility in Hayward will be held this evening, following a spirited press conference held Thursday by nurses, elected officials, parents, and their children. Speaking in strong support of keeping the unit open yesterday were Senator Ellen Corbett; Assemblymember Bob Wieckowski; Alameda County Supervisor Richard Valle; John Green, a local parent and teacher; and veteran pediatrics RN Kristine Richter.

MountainView Nurses To Hold Candlelight Vigil Over Concern for Eroding Staffing Standards

Neveda--Nurses will hold a candlelight vigil outside MountainView Hospital, Tuesday, Oct. 29 to highlight their concerns with chronic staffing issues and to demand management take action. Tuesday, in preparation for Tuesday’s vigil, nurses are conducting outreach at local shopping centers, telling community members, “As nurses, we want optimal staffing levels so that when you need one of us, we can be there for you.”

Mercy Killers--Powerful New Play Inspired by Healthcare Horror Stories Begins Chicago Run Oct. 28

Chicago--The American Theater Company of Chicago, in collaboration with National Nurses United (NNU) and the Illinois Single Payer Coalition, are bringing Broadway actor Michael Milligan’s topical solo performance, Mercy Killers, to Chicago for a five-day run Oct. 28 through Nov.3. The opening performance will also feature a panel discussion with Milligan and local activists at the University of Chicago to explore the next steps in finishing the job of healthcare reform in the nation. Admission is FREE to all performances.

Nurses, Elected Officials Condemn Kaiser’s Imminent Closure of Vital Pediatrics Unit

Closure is part of pattern of HMO’s new model of care, limiting access to hospital and nursing care. Registered nurses, elected officials, including Assemblymember Bob Wieckowski, and Alameda County Supervisor Richard Valle and concerned community members will hold a press conference Thursday, followed by a community forum Friday, to protest Kaiser Permanente’s decision to close the inpatient pediatrics unit in its Hayward facility on Nov. 17.

New Agreement for RNs at Reborn San Leandro Hospital

Registered nurses at San Leandro Hospital have achieved their first ever contract under the hospital’s new owner, Alameda (county) Health Services who will begin operating the hospital at the end of this month. AHS will maintain prior contract standards the RNs had under the hospital’s former owner, Sutter Health, with some improvements in retiree health and pension benefits, the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United announced today.

Baystate Franklin Medical Center Nurses Vote to Authorize a Three-Day Strike

GREENFIELD, Mass — The registered nurses of Baystate Franklin Medical Center cast an overwhelming vote yesterday to authorize a three-day strike in response to Baystate Health’s refusal to engage in a good faith effort to reach a settlement for a new contract, a process that has dragged on for nearly two years and had forced a previous one-day strike by the nurses on Oct. 5, 2012.
