She’s headed back to her homeland to help the hungry and the homeless in the Philippines, which is still reeling from one of the most powerful typhoons in recorded history. Myra Hidalgois, a registered nurse who works at MountainView Hospital, was to leave this morning, which means she was hurriedly packing Friday night for the 16-hour trip, with layovers in Los Angeles and Korea.

Nurses Protest Good Samaritan Hospital Plan to Slash Vital RN Positions and Undermine Patient Safety
Nurses at Good Samaritan Hospital will conduct a candlelight vigil today to alert the public to concerns over proposed cuts to critical hospital staff. The hospital plans to eliminate the position of charge nurse, who is responsible for overseeing the flow of the unit and troubleshooting patient care issues, the California Nurses Association, who represents RNs at the facility, announced today. There are currently 52 charge nurses, who are among the most experienced and seasoned RNs in the unit.

Response to Typhoon Disaster Latest Reminder–We’re Lucky to Have RNs in the World
As the heart wrenching images crossed across our screens from the Philippines, the largest U.S. organization of nurses, National Nurses United, was getting in motion as well. Our Registered Nurse Response Network put out a call. The response was overwhelming. In little more than one week, nearly 3,000 RNs from all 50 states and even 19 countries had signed up to volunteer to provide hands-on disaster relief to those in the path of the super storm.

RNRN Update: Second Delegation Leaves for Philippines with More to Follow
Members of the second team of volunteer nurses – three sisters from California – left Thursday for the Philippines to help in the RN Response Network’s relief project for Super Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda. The siblings – Mary Lou Catedral, RN, her twin sister, Mary Ann Libeta, RN and their younger sister, Nancy Canapi, RN - are returning to their hometown, Roxas City, in the province of Capiz on the island of Panay.
