Governor Signs Law to Ban Mandatory Overtime for Nurses

BOSTON, MA - Members of the Massachusetts Nurses Association/National Nurses United were at the State House today to witness Governor Deval Patrick’s signing of a new health care cost containment law that includes a ban on the dangerous practice of utilizing mandatory overtime as an alternative to providing safe registered nurse staffing levels in the state’s acute care hospitals.

Massachusetts Nurses Association Applauds Passage of Ban on Mandatory Overtime

BOSTON, MA - The Massachusetts Nurses Association/National Nurses United applauds the Massachusetts Legislature for its efforts to improve patient care conditions in Massachusetts hospitals by approving a ban on the dangerous practice of utilizing mandatory overtime--forcing nurses to work excessive hours. This measure will protect patients and save money by preventing mistakes, errors and complications resulting from RNs being forced to worked excessive hours. The mandatory overtime ban was included in the much anticipated health care cost containment legislation, which was approved by the House and Senate today.

Mass. Nurses Assoc. Applauds Overrides of Gov’s Vetoes To Save Taunton State Hospital

BOSTON, MA -- Today the Massachusetts Senate cast a unanimous vote to override Governor Deval Patrick's veto of funds necessary to keep Taunton State Hospital open, and voted to override his veto of an independent study on the mental health needs of Commonwealth residents. The senate action follows yesterday’s unanimous override votes by the House of Representatives, thereby ensuring the survival of Taunton State Hospital, with 45 beds, while providing the state with an opportunity (through the independent study) to formulate a plan to address the serious and growing mental health crisis in Massachusetts.
