Nurses to Rally Today for Safe Patient Staffing Bill for DC Hospitals

Hundreds of registered nurses will participate in a late afternoon rally today to show support for major DC legislation that would require minimum safe staffing in DC hospitals to protect patients. The Patient Protection Act, a bill to set specific limits on the number of patients RNs can safely care for in every district hospital, along with other patient protections, was introduced in early February by DC Council Chairman Phil Mendelson and nine other council members.

Thousands Urge Pres. Obama, Sec. Lew to Support 
Robin Hood Tax

Washington, D.C. – Nearly 2,000 people, decked out in Robin Hood hats and with giant puppets of Wall Street bankers descended on DC today to demand President Obama and Treasury Secretary Lew stop pursuing austerity and instead support a financial transaction tax on Wall Street, commonly referred to as a “Robin Hood Tax.”

Diminished Patient Protection Forces Steward-Quincy Medical Center Nurses to Conduct One-Day Strike

To protest dangerous staffing conditions at their hospital, registered nurses at Cerberus-Steward owned Quincy Medical Center will conduct a one-day strike on Thursday, April 11. The strike will be the first nurses’ strike at a Greater Boston hospital in more than 25 years and it has been sanctioned by the most overwhelming nurses strike vote in Massachusetts history.

No Grand Bargain; Elderly Women Hit Hardest

The largest U.S. organization of registered nurses, National Nurses United (NNU), issued its strongest warning today: Cuts in Social Security and Medicare would do harm to America’s elderly and disabled, vulnerable populations whose resources already place them in the margins. NNU called upon lawmakers to withdraw from all considerations of these cuts. Although Social Security contributes nothing to the federal deficit, Congress could increase revenue for the Social Security trust fund by raising the payroll tax income limit.
