CHICAGO – Registered nurses and other community activists will take a bus tour of polluting petcoke sites Monday, May 12, and then hold a noon press conference at City Hall to demand Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the City Council stop the delays and declare an immediate moratorium on petcoke to protect city residents.

Sen. Boxer Comments on Keystone XL Pipeline, Human Health Impact, and National Nurses United

In January, the State Department issued the Keystone XL pipeline’s Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), and it was woefully inadequate when it came to exploring the human health impacts. That is why Senator Whitehouse and I wrote to Secretary Kerry two weeks ago asking for a comprehensive human health impacts analysis of the XL pipeline. Since that time, the State Department has received over 2 million comments from the public opposing the pipeline.

California Nurses Join National March for Climate Action

As a national march convenes Saturday morning in Los Angeles for action to address the growing crisis of climate change, registered nurses will be on hand to highlight the human toll of the climate crisis. A 9 a.m. rally at Wilmington Waterfront Park in Wilmington, Ca, adjacent to C Street near the port will be followed by a march, which is the first leg of a national series of actions intended to build public demand for real solutions to address the worsening climate crisis.

Nurses Criticize State Dept Keystone XL Pipeline Report

Nurses Warn of Escalating Effects of Climate Change on Public Health. The nation’s largest U.S. organization of nurses today criticized the new State Department report on the Keystone XL Pipeline, presumably intended to encourage a green light on construction of the controversial project, for paying inadequate attention to the serious consequences on public health. “There is broad concern about the harmful health effects linked to both the extraction and transport of tar sands, as well as how the Pipeline will accelerate the steadily worsening erosion of health we see every day as a result of climate change,” said Jean Ross, RN, co-president of National Nurses United.
