Bill to Protect Taxpayer-Backed District Hospital Assets Advances in State Senate

A bill to assist communities struggling to protect district hospital services in the face of the erosion of care by corporate hospital chains like Sutter Health advanced in the California Senate today. SB1240, introduced by Senator Ellen Corbett and sponsored by the California Nurses Association, passed the Senate Local Government Committee on a 3-2 vote. It now heads to the Senate Health Committee.

Nurses, Fair Elections Advocates to Deliver “Prop. 15 Disinfectant Cleanser” to Lobbyists

Registered Nurses and advocates for fair elections will deliver a case of “Prop. 15 disinfectant cleanser” to a group sworn to defeating the campaign-finance initiative. The “lobbyists for lobbyists” have promised to spend “millions of dollars”* to block this effort to clean up money in politics, and have even sued to knock the initiative off the ballot and deny voters their say.

St. Johns Hospital on Trial for Attacking RNs’ Rights

The federal agency that oversees labor law has ordered St. Johns Health Center, located in Santa Monica and a part of the Catholic chain, Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, to stand trial on charges that it violated the rights of its registered nurses. The National Labor Relations Board is prosecuting the hospital for unlawful harassment of nurse leaders, engaging in illicit spying of RNs, and interrogating nurses about union activity, among other serious violations.

California's Leading Reform Organizations to Chair California Fair Elections Campaign

SACRAMENTO, CA -- The California Fair Elections campaign today announced that the League of Women Voters of California, the California Clean Money Action Fund, California Common Cause, and the California Nurses Association will co-chair the campaign to pass the California Fair Elections Act on the June 8, 2010 ballot. Authored by Loni Hancock and signed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, the ballot measure would establish a voluntary pilot public financing program for the 2014 and 2018 Secretary of State races.
