UCSF Children's Hospital Oakland nurses to hold rally and speak-out calling on UC to rescind layoff notices

Nurses received layoff notices on Oct.6
Registered nurses at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland (CHO) will hold a rally and speak-out on Friday, Oct. 17, to demand UCSF rescind layoff notices sent to nurses on Oct. 6, announced California Nurses Association/National Nurses United (CNA/NNU).
Over the summer, nurses at CHO were fully transitioned into the University of California system. UC had promised to expand services at the facility and assured nurses that no layoffs would result from this transition.
“Now, UC management is eliminating critical services that used to be provided for patients in Oakland,” said Gail Lorenzana, RN at CHO. “Patients will now have to travel to other campuses and wait weeks for services they could get here.”
Who: Registered nurses at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland
What: Rally and speak-out to protest nurse layoffs
When: Friday, Oct. 17, 1-2 p.m.
Where: UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, 747 52nd St., Oakland, Calif.
Nurses at CHO will speak out about the impact of layoffs on patient care and the community if UCSF continues to renege on its promise to keep care in Oakland.
“Now that many services have been centralized in San Francisco, our Oakland patients are experiencing unacceptable delays in care,” added Lorenzana. “UCSF told us this was about streamlining operations and improving patient care. But so far, all I’ve seen is the opposite.”
