Press Release
Seton nurses to hold one-day strike for patient safety
Registered nurses at AHMC Seton Medical Center in Daly City, Calif., gave notice to their employer that they will hold a strike for one day on Feb. 19, to protest the administration’s refusal to address RNs’ deep concerns about patient care and safe staffing, announced California Nurses Association/National Nurses United (CNA/NNU).
This 10-days’ notice of their strike follows a nearly unanimous strike authorization vote on Dec. 4, 2025. Nurses give at least 10 days of advance notice to the hospital to allow for alternative plans to be made for patient care.
“Seton nurses voted overwhelmingly to strike because the medical center is refusing to address issues of patient safety and understaffing,” said Michelle Kubota, a registered nurse in the medical-surgical unit. “A fair contract is necessary to retain experienced nurses, have sufficient staff and training, and ensure we have the resources we need to provide safe and effective care for our patients.“

Seton nurses have been in negotiations since January 2025 for a new contract with little to no movement on key issues. The RNs urge management to invest in nursing staff and agree to a contract that provides:
- Safe staffing on all units and during all shifts
- Provisions that will promote recruitment and retention of experienced nurses
“Seton Medical Center RNs are dedicated to our community, but the hospital’s actions will cause more nurses to leave and create more unsafe staffing,” said Cathy Evans, a registered nurse in the sub-acute unit. “Seton needs to do the right thing and negotiate a fair contract with us.”
California Nurses Association represents 300 nurses at Seton Medical Center.
California Nurses Association/National Nurses United is the largest and fastest-growing union and professional association of registered nurses in the nation with 100,000 members in more than 200 facilities throughout California and nearly 225,000 RNs nationwide.
