Ruling comes a day after VA reverses course on reduction-in-force plan following massive public outcry

Registered nurses with National Nurses Organizing Committee/National Nurses United (NNOC/NNU), along with other federal unions and veterans groups, are holding an urgent rally on Weds. July 9 to protest the U.S. Supreme Court’s 8-1 ruling, which overrides a lower court’s order that temporarily froze massive federal employee layoffs, announced NNOC/NNU today.

The high court’s decision comes one day after the VA announced plans to abandon efforts to cut 80,000 positions following massive public outcry against the proposed reduction-in-force. Despite the VA’s announcement on Monday, nurses and other federal workers are concerned that the VA will be emboldened by Tuesday’s Supreme Court ruling and move forward with new plans, which  could lead to a large number of layoffs and terminations.

The rally will be held in front of the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center at 11 a.m. Nurses will be joined by workers from numerous unions and veterans groups including SEIU Healthcare Illinois & Indiana, American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), Veterans for Peace, the Chicago Federation of Labor, and About Face Veterans.
