National Nurses’s #BernieBus Iowa Swing Underway

Rally with Jim Hightower, Labor & Grassroots Activists In Cedar Falls Highlights Tour Stops on Wednesday 

National Nurses United’s #BernieBus tour begins its second day of campaign stops in Iowa Wednesday, January 20, exactly one year before the next President takes office, with a 3 p.m. rally in Cedar Falls featuring noted commentator and activists Jim Hightower, the former Texas Agricultural Commissioner.
 
Chris Shelton, national union president of the Communication Workers of America, and NNU Co-President Jean Ross will join Hightower in the rally which will remind voters of reasons why Sen. Bernie Sanders best reflects the values of nurses, workers, and community residents. The Iowa bus tour is co-sponsored by the Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement Action Fund (CCI).
 
Later Wednesday, the #BernieBus will bring nurses and activists to meet volunteers in Waterloo at a phone bank for Sanders at Mt. Carmel Missionary Church where they will be hosted by Pastor Frantz Whitfield.

On Tuesday, the #BernieBus began its Iowa campaign swing bringing nurses and activists to a rally at the American Postal Workers Union Hall Local 44 in Des Moines featuring NNU, CWA, APWU, and CCI Action Fund members before paying a visit to meet students at the Iowa State University campus in Ames, Ia.
 
In the #BernieBus campaign swing, which has been to Nevada, and included stops in Denver and Kansas City, nurses have visited hospitals, to encourage other RNs to register to vote and pledge to caucus or vote for Sanders, colleges, rallies and other events where Sanders has spoken, public gatherings to spread the message of the campaign.
 
Speaking of the NNU endorsement of Sanders at the rally Tuesday morning, Ross noted the endorsement of Sanders was “very easy for us. Our values of caring, compassion and community are his values.” Noting Sanders release of an updated and expanded Medicare for all plan, Ross noted, this plan is achievable.”
 
Iowa RN Kris Dixon added that “no one should have to choose between food and medical care.”
 
 “I was undecided until I met Sen. Bernie Sanders,” said CWA Iowa State Council President Steve Abbott.
