More than 13,500 nurses ratify four-year contract with CommonSpirit/Dignity Health

Nurses at 27 Dignity Health facilities in California and Nevada voted in favor of new agreement with patient care and workplace protections

Registered nurses at CommonSpirit/Dignity Health facilities in California and Nevada voted overwhelmingly in favor of ratifying a new four-year contract, announced California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee (CNA/NNOC), an affiliate of National Nurses United. The fair and equitable agreement recognizes the hard work, dedication, and essential contributions of nurses represented by CNA/NNOC. Voting concluded on June 5.

“With this critical milestone achieved, we can now turn our collective focus to the broader social issues that affect our communities — including the urgent need for humane immigration reform, protecting health care from further cuts, and opposing harmful federal reductions that threaten essential public services,” said Phil Penn, RN in the intensive care unit at St. Mary Medical Center, Long Beach, California.

Key Highlights of the new agreement:

  • All existing patient care and workplace protections maintained.
  • Wage increases across the board, with additional market adjustments in select regions.
  • Full preservation of pension and retiree health benefits.
  • No concessions or takeaways.

The new contract will be in effect from June 30, 2025, through June 30, 2029.

“These competitive gains will help us recruit new RNs and retain experienced nurses, which is essential to ensuring patient safety,” said Kathy Dennis, RN in the float pool at Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento, California.

“Our commitment to justice extends beyond the bedside,” said Sandy Reding, RN in the operating room at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital in Bakersfield, California, and a president of CNA/NNOC. “With a contract now in place, we can refocus on what nurses do best — advocating for our patients and our communities.”

CNA/NNOC represents more than 13,500 registered nurses at 27 CommonSpirit/Dignity Health facilities throughout California and Nevada.

California Nurses Association/National Nurses United is the largest and fastest-growing union and professional association of registered nurses in the nation with 100,000 members in more than 200 facilities throughout California and nearly 225,000 RNs nationwide.
