CNA/NNOC statement on redistricting efforts in Democratic-held states

California nurses hold signs that read "Protect Democracy."

Union of 100,000 registered nurses in all 50 states respond to Trump, Republican power grab

California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee (CNA/NNOC) fully supports efforts by Governor Gavin Newsom to counterbalance President Trump and the Republican Party’s election-rigging schemes ahead of the 2026 midterms and encourages leaders of Democratic-held states to respond similarly with effective redistricting plans.

Nurses are unequivocally committed to blocking the authoritarian overthrow of our democracy. Texas Republicans’ Congressional redistricting proposal, encouraged by President Trump, would create the most discriminatory maps since the Voting Rights Act was passed in 1965, leaving Latino voters with one-third the political power of white voters in the state and Black voters with one-fifth. Republicans have to resort to racist election rigging because their policies — gutting collective bargaining rights for federal workers and weakening Veterans Administration Health services, slashing funding for essential safety net programs like Medicaid and Medicare, and failing to curb the high cost of living while providing tax cuts to billionaires — won’t win them elections. President Trump has encouraged this blatant power grab in order to block voters from deciding whether Democrats should retake the House in 2026.

Nurses support Governor Newsom’s Election Rigging Response Act, which puts forward a redistricting plan that counterbalances the Texas MAGA proposal, first in the California legislature this week and then the California electorate in November. If left unchecked, Republicans’ redistricting aspirations will continue the destruction of our country’s foundations for the benefit of the billionaire class — at the expense of our patients, the working class, and the communities we advocate for every day. We encourage all other Democratic-held states to move with similar urgency.
