California nurses canvass, phonebank for Prop. 50

With just a few weeks left until the special election on November 4, California union nurses are knocking on doors and calling voters across the state to vote Yes on Proposition 50, announced California Nurses Association (CNA).
“Union nurses are committed to protecting our democracy and ensuring fair representation in our elections,” said Sandy Reding, RN and a president of CNA. “We need to have a level playing field in our elections, which is what Prop. 50 does.”
Congressional redistricting in Texas and other states would create the most discriminatory maps since the Voting Rights Act was passed in 1965, leaving Latino voters with one-third the political power of white voters in the state and Black voters with one-fifth.
Republicans have gutted collective bargaining rights for federal workers, weakened Veterans Administration Health services, and slashed funding for essential safety net programs such as Medicaid and Medicare to give tax cuts to billionaires and corporations. They have attacked public health, union rights, Social Security, and more.
“Working people must fight to win back health care for millions of people across the country. Funding for Medicaid and other lifesaving programs is being cut to make the rich even richer,” said Reding, RN. “We must protect our most vulnerable patients and communities. This is why nurses are calling voters and knocking on doors for Prop. 50.
“My hospital is in Bakersfield where nearly two-thirds of the people get life-saving health care through Medi-Cal, California’s Medicaid program,” continued Reding. “Congress voted to gut Medicaid.
“This is an emergency for our democracy,” said Reding.
California Nurses Association represents more than 100,000 members in over 200 facilities throughout California.
