SB 1334: Meal & Break Terminology Flyer

After months of engaging in direct actions at all of our facilities, meeting with California legislators, and making thousands of phone calls to the Governor’s office, Governor Newsom signed SB 1334 into law. SB 1334 extends the protections of the California Labor Code to public sector and UC nurses and health care workers who provide or support direct patient care in a hospital, clinic, or public health setting. Upon implementation, this law will guarantee public sector health care workers the same pay for missed meal and rest periods as their private sector counterparts.

Nurses denounce dangerous move by industry to leave patients stranded home all alone

The health care industry is investing in a plan to remove patients from the bedside and transition them to receive hospital care at home. Thus far, the model we have seen at hospitals pushes med/surg patients or ED patients to home to care for themselves through a subcontractor service model, rather than being admitted. This practice is dangerous, leaving high acuity patients stranded and alone, Home All Alone.

CNA/CHEU introduces meal and rest break legislation for public sector employees

Nurses and health care workers are demanding that the hospital industry prioritize patients over profits — ensuring all public sector workers in a health care setting are entitled to meals and breaks, and if the employer fails to provide coverage, then the employee is entitled to meal and break penalty pay for time worked.
