Every year, Maryland hospitals sue tens of thousands of patients, resulting in financial devastation for those who cannot afford to pay. There is currently parallel legislation in the Maryland State Senate and House of Delegates that would reform the state's medical debt system and protect patients.

The Senate Finance Committee will hold hearings on SB 873, the Medical Debt Protection Act, and SB 875, the Financial Assistance Policies and Bill Collections Act.

The House Health and Government Operations Committee will hold hearings on HB 1081, the Medical Debt Protection Act, and HB 1420, the Financial Assistance Policies and Bill Collections Act.
