Central Maine Medical Center nurses vote overwhelmingly to join MSNA/National Nurses Organizing Committee

Registered nurses at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Maine, voted overwhelmingly tonight to join Maine State Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee, an affiliate of National Nurses United, the largest and fastest-growing registered nurse (RN) union in the nation. In an election held today, September 24, nurses voted 91 percent yes to forming a union.

Registered nurses at Central Maine Medical Center (CMMC) in Lewiston, Maine will hold an informational picket on Tuesday, September 15 in solidarity with nurse colleagues within the Prime Healthcare hospital system who are on strike on the same day at Olympia Fields Hospital in Olympia Fields, Illinois to protest the suspension of six nurses at Olympia Fields.

Registered nurses at three Prime Healthcare hospitals in Nevada and California, as well as nurses and health care workers at an additional hospital in California, will hold a sympathy strike for one day on September 15 in solidarity with nurses at Olympia Fields Hospital in Illinois who are striking on the same day to protest the suspension of six nurses at Olympia Fields Hospital.

RNs at two Prime Healthcare hospitals in Nevada and California and nurses and health care workers at a Prime facility in California gave notice that they will hold a sympathy strike for one day on September 15 in solidarity with striking nurses at Olympia Fields Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Nurses at another Chicago hospital and at a hospital in Lewiston, Maine, will hold informational pickets in solidarity with Olympia Fields RNs on the same day.

Debora Kapisha, RN, freed from ICE custody, returns home

Debora Kapisha, the registered nurse detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) recently at Portland International Jetport, has been released from ICE custody and is on her way home to Maine. Kapisha, a medical-surgical nurse at Maine Medical Center in Portland, is a member of Maine State Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee an affiliate of National Nurses United, the country’s largest nurses union.

Hundreds of union registered nurses, community allies, and elected officials rallied in Portland, Maine to demand the release of Debora Kapisha, RN, a nurse at Maine Medical Center who is currently detained by ICE. They scored a major first victory by successfully blocking her transfer from Massachusetts to Louisiana, where she would have been far from her family, legal counsel, and support network.

Nurses at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine are staging an emergency protest Wednesday, Aug. 5 to demand the immediate release of an RN colleague who is being detained by ICE despite the fact that she is legally authorized to live and work in the country while she waits for her asylum case from Zambia to be processed.
