Political Coordinator — Sacramento or Oakland
California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee (CNA/NNOC), California’s largest nurses union, seeks a Political Coordinator to strengthen and support the relationships of the union with elected officials, governmental agencies, policymakers, and the political community in Sacramento, California, and in 15 other states. Serving under the direction of the Government Relations Director, the Political Coordinator works closely with the Political Director and key leadership within the union. In this role they are responsible for developing, executing, and aligning political and policy programs at the statewide, legislative, and regulatory levels.
The position of Political Coordinator in the Government Relations department is open for appointment in the Sacramento or Oakland office.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as a liaison to the PAC Committee, under the direction of the GR Director and in support of the Political Director. Liaison with state leaders across the country at all levels and/or their political teams, as needed.
- Develop and strengthen the union’s statewide political program in California and other states with the PAC Committee to help to elect progressive pro-nurse, pro-labor candidates and pass endorsed ballot measures.
- Support the Political Director in managing the overall endorsement process for state/local ballot measures, legislative, constitutional, and local campaigns for the consideration of the PAC Committee.
- Manage coalition engagement and outreach to statewide labor and other political and policy organizations and represent the Union at coalition tables for endorsed positions on state and local ballot measure campaigns.
- Assist as needed in producing written documents on the legislative, regulatory, and policy priorities set forth by the Union and occasionally make verbal comments.
- Develop policy positions, testimony, talking points, and lobbying materials.
- Assist in monitoring and reviewing legislation and government agency regulations in support of the Union’s policy priorities.
- Support the Political Director in the management of PAC related financial and compliance activities in conjunction with key union leaders.
- Administrative tasks related to candidate endorsement process on state, constitutional, and local level as needed.
Requirements
- At least 3 years of successful experience in union or other social justice advocacy organization.
- Ability to develop, build and maintain professional relationships with government leaders, staff, coalition partners, and potential allies.
- Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of governmental relations and related issues.
- Working knowledge of California or other state politics and their legislative and regulatory process.
- Highly developed communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships with allied organizations and labor union
- Demonstrated written and analytical skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team
- Effective time management skills, including demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects.
Preferred Experience:
- 5+ years of successful experience in union or other social justice advocacy.
- 3-5+ years of political, legislative, or issue campaign experience.
- Bachelor’s degree a plus or relevant advanced degree a plus.
- Experience in labor or health policy issues.
- Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Excel, Word).
- Ability to travel extensively and valid driver’s license.
