Who We Are

National Nurses United (NNU), the largest U.S. union and professional association of registered nurses, is hosting an event this Sept. 12 - 15 in San Francisco. The Global Nurses Solidarity Assembly will involve nearly 2,000 people, predominantly RNs and women from throughout the country as well as from more than two dozen international RN and health care worker unions.

Call For Artists

We invite artists to submit work centered around the theme of "Recognition." The art will be on display for attendees during the 3.5-day event. The venue is the Hilton San Francisco Union Square. After the event, the art will be on display at NNU’s Oakland headquarters until Oct. 4.

Curation Theme

"Recognition" is defined as the acknowledgment of someone's existence, validity, identity, or legality. It’s the public acknowledgment of a person's status or merits. Recognition shows humanity.

Your art could address your own interpretation of “Recognition” or it could reflect the issues that are being addressed at this assembly as seen through the lens of health care. These issues are:

  • Workplace democracy and rights (nationally and internationally)
  • Health care justice/Medicare For All
  • Racial justice
  • Gender equity
  • Environmental justice
  • The future of democracy
  • Attacks on public services: austerity and privatization

Submission Requirements

If you would like to participate, please submit 1-3 images of your work including its dimensions and weight. New and old works are welcome. For new art, also submit samples of your work with a proposal that includes approximate dimensions and weight. Due to limited space, extremely large pieces and installations cannot be accommodated. We are looking for flat pieces like paintings, prints, photography, posters, and mixed media that can be hung on walls. Maximum size is 52” x 46". Three-dimensional pieces cannot have a footprint larger than 2 feet square. All pieces must be ready to hang.

More About The Event

On Sept 13, we will also be hosting a one-day event in Yerba Buena Gardens featuring a performance of "The People Speak," which will feature actors and musicians giving voice to the actual words of rebels, dissenters, and visionaries from our past and present who stand for social justice. “The People Speak” is inspired by Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States and Voices of a People’s History of the United States.

Images of the art will also be replicated for display in the garden. After the performance ends, there will be a reception for assembly attendees at the hotel where the art will be displayed. The Global Nurses Solidarity Assembly ends at noon on Sept. 15, after which the art will be transported to and installed in NNU's headquarters in Oakland until Friday, Oct. 4. The exhibition will be on view to the general public on Friday, Sept. 20 and 27, and Oct. 4 during evening hours. Closing reception on Oct. 4 (First Friday/Oakland Art Murmur), open to the general public with alcohol-free drinks and hors d'oeuvres. We are coordinating viewing times with NNU Friday night film events.

An artists' panel will be convened during the event. The subject is "Art and Social Movements".
