With a 94 percent yes vote, University of Michigan registered nurses in July approved a new contract that includes competitive wage increases, improved nurse-to-patient ratios, and stronger workplace protections.
The Ann Arbor university’s 7,500 RNs are members of MNA-University of Michigan Professional Nurse Council (MNA-UMPNC), a local union of the Michigan Nurses Association. The contract ratification vote took place in July.
Highlights of the contract include:
- Competitive wage increases (base of 4 percent the first year, 4.5 percent the second year and 4.75 percent the third, for a total of 13.25 percent over three years)
- Stronger workplace violence protections
- Improved staffing ratios
- No pre-scheduled patient assignments for charge RNs
- Historic gains for advanced practice registered nurses
- Ratification bonus
"U of M nurses approved this contract in a landslide because they know it is so good that it sets the standard for the rest of the state," said Kara Ayotte, RN, president of MNA-UMPNC. "We're proud to have negotiated such strong wage increases, better staffing ratios, improved workplace violence protections, and so much more.
“Our success is a testament not only to countless days at the bargaining table, but also to the collective solidarity by our members,” Ayotte continued. “This contract shows what union nurses can achieve when we stick together and fight for what's best for nurses and patients."
