RNs to Join Thursday Press Conference with Teachers, Union Leaders

SAN DIEGO—The California Nurses Association/National Nurses United, California’s largest and leading organization of nurses, has endorsed San Diego City Council member David Alvarez for mayor and will join a Thursday press conference with other leading community leaders to support his candidacy.

“Residents of San Diego are clearly ready for a change in City Hall, and David Alvarez is that candidate,” said former CNA President Geri Jenkins, RN, recently retired from the University of California San Diego Medical Center where she worked for 30 years.

“David Alvarez has been a leader in the fight for a clean, healthy environment. He has also campaigned for a buffer zone between commercial zones and poor neighborhoods where children grow up with asthma and other chronic ailments due to pollution that past administrations ignored. Nurses are proud to announce their support for David Alvarez for mayor,” Jenkins said.

Jenkins will join Assemblymember Toni Atkins, leaders of women’s organizations, labor, student groups, and other nurses and community activists at a 2 p.m. press conference at Grant Hill Park.

What:        Press Conference —Nurses, Teachers, Women and Union Leaders Endorse Councilmember David Alvarez for Mayor

When:       Thursday, September 26, 2 p.m.

Where:      Grant Hill Park, 2676 J Street, San Diego 92102 (enter park at J and 27th St)

RNs say they will also alert the public to concerns about the candidacy of Nathan Fletcher who, notes Raymond McCune, RN and longtime Rancho Bernardo resident, “has sponsored state legislation that undermines important patient care safety standards. By contrast, David Alvarez will fight to improve healthcare in our community, not weaken it.”

Alvarez is also endorsed by the San Diego Democratic Party, San Diego Labor Council, and major environmental organizations including the Environmental Health and Justice Campaign
