Industrial Influences in Nursing Policy and Practice

Course Description

The US health care system is undergoing a period of rapid restructuring facilitated by deregulation and increased reliance on technology. The Covid 19 crisis has also dramatically impacted the nursing workforce. The convergence of technology, deregulation, and an epidemic of moral injury in the nursing workforce is being used by the health care industry as justification to make dramatic cuts to registered nurse staffing. If allowed to continue unchallenged, restructuring could fundamentally alter the role RNs in the US health care system. This class will identify industry initiatives, past and present, to minimize the role of registered nurses in health care delivery. Current trends, future threats, and the driving forces behind them will be explained and evaluated through the reported experience of direct-care nurses and available evidence.
