Medicare for All

Astronomical healthcare costs and lack of access continue to drive individuals, families and businesses past their breaking point while insurance companies continue to soak-up billions of healthcare dollars as millions of children's basic needs go unmet. NNU supports the American Health Security Act of 2015, H.R. 1200 and the Expanded & Improved Medicare For All Act, H.R. 676, that requires each participating state to set up and administer comprehensive healthcare services as an entitlement for all, through a progressively financed, single-payer system, administered by the states.

Medicare has provided guaranteed healthcare for millions of American seniors, marks its 50th anniversary this year. The American Health Security Act, H.R. 1200 and H.R. 676, would establish a Medicare for all, single-payer healthcare system that would end health disparities, effectively control costs, and assure that everyone has equal access to an excellent standard of care.

Coloradans Will Put Single-Payer Health Care To A Vote

On a brisk morning in Denver recently, an ambulance pulled up in front of a downtown office tower. "I think the patient is going to make it," Dr. Irene Aguilar said as a team rolled out the gurney. This wasn't a medical emergency, but rather a bit of political theater. The gurney held several big boxes of signed petitions to be delivered to Colorado's Secretary of State's office. The group ColoradoCareYES gathered enough signatures — more than 100,000 — to put a single-payer health system on the ballot next fall. —John Daley / NPR, 12/22/15 More »

The UN’s development goals require another step first: universal healthcare

The UN’s development goals require another step first: universal healthcare

The World Health Organization estimates that every year 150 million people suffer severe financial hardship because they have to pay out of their own pockets at the time they receive care, and 100 million are pushed into poverty as a result. These statistics, intimidating in themselves, probably mask a problem that cuts far deeper into families and societies across the world. —Sania Nishtar / The Guardian, 09/29/15 More »

America celebrates 50 years of Medicare:  Parties, pies, and a rallying cry for change

On July 30, nurses, seniors, elected official, healthcare activists, and more—threw a huge cross-country, 25-city celebration of Medicare’s 50th birthday. Under the rallying cry “Protect! Improve! Expand!” (PIE), it’s no wonder birthday cake gave way to pie on this landmark day, where community fun mixed with moving testimony on Medicare’s role in making healthcare a human right. —National Nurses United, 08/27/15 More »
