Medicare for All

Astronomical healthcare costs and lack of access continue to drive individuals, families and businesses past their breaking point while insurance companies continue to soak-up billions of healthcare dollars as millions of children's basic needs go unmet. NNU supports the American Health Security Act of 2013, H.R. 1200 and S. 1782, by Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Jim McDermott, that requires each participating state to set up and administer comprehensive healthcare services as an entitlement for all, through a progressively financed, single-payer system, administered by the states.

When health insurers play games, patients lose

Dr. Theodore Corwin jumps through numerous hoops to get UnitedHealthcare to pay for a patient's breast reduction — only to finally be told the surgery wasn't covered by her policy. Profits Over Patients

Profits Over Patients

Much is wrong with the process of pricing and providing health care in America. The National Nurses United, the largest nurses organization, recently released a study that shows the top 100 most expensive U.S. Hospitals have a charge-to-cost ratio of 765 percent and higher. The worst offender in Ohio is right here in Summit County – Summa Barberton at a mind-numbing 654 percent. It is followed in fourth place by Summa Western Reserve at a whopping 577 percent. What has become obvious is the health-care establishment here and across the country is more concerned with profits than patients. —OpEd in the Akron Beacon Journal Online, 02/21/14 More »

Nurses Take Campaign to Heal America to Congress

Registered nurses from across the country went to Washington DC last week to urge Congress to take action to fix the nation’s broken health care system by enacting Medicare for All. While our nation’s health care system has incredibly capable nurses and other health professionals, and boasts a variety of other advantages like the highest spending per person in the world, we don’t get the outcomes we should. Far too many go without health care when they need it. Our nation ranks behind 19 industrialized countries in preventable deaths among those under age 75. —Deborah Burger, National Nurses United, 05/27/14 More »
