Help Heal DC: Pass the Patient Protection Act

Nurses are increasingly put into impossible situations by hospital managers who demand they care for more patients than is safe. There is a proven method to save patient lives and save hospital money—mandated minimum nurse-to-patient staffing ratios. Legislation that would mandate such ratios in DC hospitals was introduced in the DC Council on February 5, 2013. The Patient Protection Act, the bill, once enacted, will improve healthcare for patients in all DC hospitals by:

  • Establishing minimum RN-to-patient ratios on all units at all times to protect patient safety.
  • Protecting the right of nurses to advocate in their patients’ interests.
  • Instituting genuine whistle-blower protection for RNs, other healthcare providers, and patients who report unsafe conditions.
  • Forbidding unsafe, mandatory overtime that puts patients in danger.
  • Protecting ancillary staff and providing hospitals an opportunity to increase nursing staff beyond minimum standards when needed.

Please help pass the Patient Protection Act by signing our letter to the DC Mayor and Councilmembers. Thank you!

HEAL DC: Public Support for the DC Patient Protection Act!
Dear [Recipient],
The patient care crisis in DC’s hospitals is real and an emergency that needs to be addressed by the District of Columbia Council. As a registered nurse who cares for the people of this city, I can tell you: there are simply not enough nurses in the hospitals to take care of the patients. What this means is lives are unnecessarily put in danger. The public must be assured that if they need hospital care, there is a guarantee of a minimum level of safe staffing in every unit of the hospital, every hour of every day. Nurses must be allowed to do their jobs: healing the sick and injured. There is a proven method to save patient lives—mandated minimum nurse staffing ratios. The Patient Protection Act would mandate such ratios in DC hospitals and improve healthcare for all patients. Please vote for this measure when it comes up at Tuesday’s Council meeting. This is literally a matter of life and death.
Sincerely,

[Your Name]
