Nurses and patients everywhere in America deserve guaranteed nurse-to-patient ratios. Please add my voice to the growing effort to win ratios, and defend them against attack.
In California, the only state with a guaranteed RN-to-patient ratio law, those ratios are under attack. The California Hospital Association and its partner, United Healthcare Workers West (SEIU-UHW), are aggressively moving to dismantle the ratios. They have jointly proposed to “suspend” the ratios during RNs’ meal and break periods. This “suspension” would effectively destroy the ratios. California judge Gail Ohanesian ruled that eliminating ratios during meals and breaks would “…make the nurse-to-patient ratios meaningless.” This proposal is nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt to provide California’s hospital corporations with higher profits—after raking in over $4 billion in profits last year!
The Patient Advocacy Coalition for Ratios believes that nurses and patients everywhere should demand guaranteed ratios. We strenuously oppose this assault on the ratios in California by the hospital industry and their union partner, SEIU-UHW.
At a time when RNs and patients everywhere in America desperately need improved staffing to save lives, the growing movement to win ratios is critically important. National Nurses United (NNU), the nation’s largest RN organization, has sponsored state and federal ratio legislations. We must defeat this plot to destroy ratios in California in order to win ratios everywhere.
