Nurses Stand Up to Chevron with Richmond, California Residents

Nurses Stand Up to Chevron with Richmond, California Residents

Nurses turned out in Richmond, California at the Planning Commission hearing to bear witness to the life-threatening health impacts of Chevron’s planned expansion project of it’s coastal refinery. The Chevron project would send our community down the dangerous path to refining extreme fossil fuels and dirtier crude. In a community already facing increased rates of asthma, cancer, and low birth weight babies, this project will make our air quality more hazardous and our neighborhoods dumping grounds for even more toxic chemicals. Congress and the President: Just Because You Were Bullied, Don’t Take It Out on Our Seniors

Congress and the President: Just Because You Were Bullied, Don’t Take It Out on Our Seniors

Let’s try to remember a lesson we all should have learned as kids. Just because you were picked on by the neighborhood bully is no excuse to go home and kick the dog or punch your little brother. Maybe some inside the Beltway need a refresher course. Just because a handful on the right have shut down government and threatened default on the debt that’s no excuse to embrace proposals to slash Medicare and Social Security. More »

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO “GOOD JOBS”?

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO “GOOD JOBS”?

It is hard to pinpoint the precise moment when “good jobs” disappeared from national discourse, ignored by our leaders and the media that cover them. The phrase was invoked during President Obama’s campaign—that is, his first run for the presidency. But it soon disappeared in a West Wing dominated by Wall Street. More »

A small sales tax on Wall Street reaps big rewards

One has to wonder if Paul Schott Stevens’ “Don’t enact financial transaction taxes,” December 20, 2012, is more about protecting the turf of billion dollar Wall Street banks and enormous investment firms, including their lucrative mutual fund businesses, than protecting the average people who invest and save. Don’t Push Seniors Off the ‘Fiscal Cliff’

Don’t Push Seniors Off the ‘Fiscal Cliff’

With the November election rapidly fading into memory and the basic building blocks of a civil society once again under grave threat from Wall Street and their acolytes in Washington, nurses and other activists have, once again, had to step up the fight to protect basic programs and make the case for real revenue needed to build a sustainable future. In the debate over the “fiscal cliff,” President Obama and congressional Republicans have returned to the proposals that they were sparring over before the election.
